Sastav Nikole Jontesa, I mjesto:
The education system in some countries can be a mess. Constant reforms, adjustments of programs, introduction of new subjects but also, most importantly, the reduction or in some cases outright dismissal of the importance of subjects that have been taaught for, well, centuries.
It really is a sad day for those who devoted their lives to spreading knowledge when they come to realise that their profession is being reduced to just a rudimentary tool, whose function will soon be simply to insert the most basic of information into the next generation. History and geography, for instance, subjects integral to the cultural awareness of an individual, have often been on the margins. To think that someone would even mention the possibility of the subjects being thrown out the window is terrifying. A Spanish writer once said: “He who has no basic understanding of history is doomed to repeat it.” To know the mistakes of our predecessors is to know how to avoid them. A society without the moral guidance of the past is destined to ruin its future.
And how should we understand history if we have no knowledge of geography? There is a reason, a very simple reason why these two fields are studied together at universities, and that is the innate connection a region has with the events that transpired on it. Often the structure of a region or continent shapes the course of history it will experience.
There is a reason some subjects have been taught for centuries. It would be madness to deprive society of knowledge so vital to its survival.
